An AED or Automated External Defibrillator is a portable, user-friendly device that will diagnose a potentially life-threatening heart rhythm. If the AED detects this rhythm it will prompt you to provide a shock by to the patient by pushing a button in an effort to restore a normal heart rhythm.
AEDs provide simple audio and visual instructions and are designed for use by community members.
Where are the AEDs in the Fort Collins Community?
Poudre Fire Authority has joined the more than 700 other communities in the United States who are partnering with and promoting Pulse Point to its residents. This free phone app, which interfaces with emergency communication centers, notifies the app user when CPR is needed in his or her area and where the closest AEDs are in relation to that location.
“The goal is to get more community members to respond to increase the response time for sudden cardiac arrest,” said Janet Werst, Supervisor of Community Health Improvement for UCHealth in northern Colorado.
Sudden cardiac arrest is the leading cause of death for people over 40 in the United States. One reason for this is that a person in cardiac arrest has about 10 minutes to live without intervention – and in about 60 percent of incidents, a victim doesn’t get CPR until the emergency medical team arrives.
“The technology (of Pulse Point) collaborates with 911 and interfaces with its dispatch system so that when a call comes in for a sudden cardiac event, it automatically goes to Pulse Point and a push notification goes to those who have signed up on the app,” said Kim Ewy, Pulse Point coordinator for Poudre Fire Authority.
There are AEDs in all Poudre School District Schools, Colorado State University, Anheuser Busch, Otterbox, the City of Fort Collins offices, and at many other businesses in Fort Collins. Familiarize yourself with your surroundings to know where the closest AED is to you at your workplace.
If your workplace does not have an AED, but would like to get one, you may contact any authorized dealer of AEDs. A few examples are listed below:
